Start your Steller Project from the Ground Up!

before steller floors

When you are planning your flooring project, the versatility of Steller Floors means you can start anywhere for your renovation, new build, or commercial space.

Since there’s no reason to be worried about nails or glue with a Steller Floor, your subfloor can be made of OSB/plywood, concrete, and even terrazzo or existing wood floors. Our installation methods make your free-floating floor easy to install and hassle free!

To start, all hardwood floors should be laid over a flat subfloor (NWFA guidelines), and with Steller Floors, you can lay your flooring planks over liquid leveler–which is not an option for traditional nailed down floors. Even better, if you notice your subfloor is uneven once you have laid down planks, you can always pull up your Steller planks using a suction cup to repair the subfloor instead of damaging brand new glued or nailed-down planks!
But what about underlayments? Which ones work best with a Steller Hardwood floor? We generally recommend at minimum a moisture barrier to keep moisture from rising up underneath the flooring (6 mil poly), but you can choose to add an additional layer of tarpaper or light foam which can help bridge minor subfloor imperfections. We do not recommend thick underlayments (like QuietWalk) because it is “too squishy” and interferes with the ability of Steller clips to interlock with the flooring planks.

For sound-proofing, our clients have used two layers of OSB with sound proofing membranes between the two sheets of OSB, which avoids the problem of the underlayment being “too squishy” for installation. And, if you decide to experiment with new or different underlayments, we’d love to hear about it!
