How do I Install a Steller Floor Near Cabinets?

We recommend running flooring up to just under the toe-kick on your base cabinets so that the planks are not trapped in the event of a flood.

Traditionally, flooring is installed underneath cabinets to avoid the problem of encountering missing flooring during future renovations. With Steller Floors, you have the flexibility to place cabinets directly on the flooring if you prefer, but there are several reasons why you might choose not to:

  1. Preserve Functionality
Trapping a floating floor under cabinets and heavy appliances can reduce its functional value during a water leak from a dishwasher or ice machine. If one of these appliances malfunctions, having the floor extend underneath can complicate removal and installation.

    • In case of a flood, the best scenario is catching the issue fairly quickly, using your suction cup to pull up planks, drying out and then reinstalling the flooring planks.
  2. Flexibility to Replace Planks
Unlike many traditional hardwood options, Steller Floors offers a unique advantage: you can always order replacement planks, as we never discontinue colors. This ensures that even during a renovation or repair, you can maintain a seamless and matching look.

  3. Cost Efficiency
There’s no need to purchase more flooring than necessary. By stopping the floor at just under the edge of the cabinet footprint, you can reduce material costs without sacrificing appearance or performance.

Installation Tips for Cabinets and Steller Floors:

  1. Elevate Cabinets
Consider raising cabinets on ¾-inch or 5/8-inch plywood to allow the floor to run underneath just to the lip. This provides a polished look while maintaining the flexibility and movement of the Steller Floor.
  2. Leave Expansion Gaps
Always leave at least a 1/2" expansion gap between the flooring and cabinet supports. Use expanded foam spacers to maintain consistency. This gap allows for natural expansion and contraction with changes in humidity.

  3. Avoid Pinning the Floor
Never secure the floating floor to cabinets with nails or screws. Doing so will restrict the movement of the planks and can cause warping over time. Instead, use trim or molding to cover expansion gaps.

  4. Consider Additional Protection
While you renovate it might be worth applying a liquid moisture barrier - like Red Gaurd - on your subfloor components or adding a hidden drain. These, in addition to your Steller Floor, would limit the consequences of a flood from spreading to other areas in the space.

  5. Plan for Future Adjustments
Steller Floors’ floating system means planks can be easily removed and replaced, shuffled, or reordered if needed. This flexibility is particularly valuable in kitchens, where renovations or plumbing or appliance adjustments may occur.

With these considerations and Steller Floors’ unique design advantages, you can achieve a beautiful and functional installation near cabinets that meets both your aesthetic and practical needs. For further guidance, visit the Steller Knowledge Hub or contact us at 1-800-955-7671.
