Do you recommend Steller Floors for Kitchens and Bathrooms?

Steller Floors are a unique solution for spaces occasionally affected by water

In the recent past hardwood floors have been discouraged in certain parts of the home because of exposure to liquid water and humidity. Today, modern HVAC and Steller Floors' functionality have changed the calculus - but to a moderate extent.

For Kitchens and Dry Bathrooms

Our typical recommended humidity conditions match the human comfort zone - 35 - 50% RH and around 70 degrees F. Under these typical interior conditions, Steller Floors are a great solution for spaces including Kitchens and Bathrooms that are sometimes exposed to liquid water - but are not constantly exposed.

Planks are easily removed and replaced using a simple suction cupFor example, in a kitchen you are unlikely to have a dishwasher leak on a regular basis. But if on occasion you do encounter a dishwasher leak - your Steller Floor helps you respond. The same goes for a toilet overflowing. In these cases, you would vastly prefer to have a Steller Floor that allows you to remove planks and dry out, versus a wood floor that had been permanently affixed.

Cabinet Placement

Given the utility of being able to remove Steller Floors planks in an emergency, we do not recommend placing cabinets on top of a Steller Floor. Instead, we recommend setting your cabinets up on 3/4" or 5/8" plywood (or blocks) and running your flooring up to just under the base (with an appropriate expansion gap). In that case, it is easy to pop out and replace planks without disturbing your cabinets.

What happens if I get a small spill?

The gap between Steller Floors planks when installed under typical conditions is smaller than the surface tension of water. So, if you've spilled around a cup of water, just wipe it up. If your splash is close to a gallon or more, it is wise to pull our your suction cup and remove planks to dry out.

What if my pet, child or spouse is more like Shamu and gets water everywhere?

For this reason, we still discourage you from using our floors in rooms with constant exposure to liquid water and high humidity.

Spaces like this include busy mudrooms, children's bathrooms with bathtubs, and spaces that have a shower running more than an hour a day. In these spaces, we would never recommend any wood product and would advise you to use tile instead.
