How to make trim and stair treads that match Steller Floors
Here at Steller Floors, we are experts at making solid hardwood planks that are built to last for generations and we offer matching water-based stains and primers for your locally-produced wood products.
Here's how to get treads, trim and other wood products to match your Steller Floor:
1) Collect samples of all your materials locally.
You might have decided to use pine or oak trim that is widely available at hardware stores and online, but you have chosen a different species for your Steller Floor. Collect sample pieces of each material you hope to match.
2) Order matching water-based stains from Steller
Once you have collected all of your materials, you'll want to test to make sure that the stain looks the same on the flooring as it does on the other wood pieces. Apply water based sealant ("wood conditioner") first, allow it to dry according to manufacturer recommendations and then apply coats of our stain while allowing them to dry between coats.
When you feel close to the color you would like we recommend applying a coat of locally-sourced, water based, satin polyurethane. Confirm that the chosen finish has not changed the color substantially before treating the other wood materials in a similar fashion.
If applying stain from Steller is unlikely to match on the wood variety of your choice (your Steller Floor is Oak, and your trim is pine), you can use a free matching service - like those offered by Sherwin Williams-to help you find the right color for a match.
3) Install your materials and apply your custom stain and finish.
When you apply stains that you purchase from other manufacturers, we strongly recommend following their application directions and testing a small area of the room first to ensure the best match in color and sheen.
